Do You Qualify?

To join the Made in Alberta program, your product needs to meet certain criteria:

• Unprocessed products such as vegetables, fruits and eggs must be raised, grown, or sourced in Alberta, or
• Processed food and beverage products may use ingredients from outside Alberta, as long as the final substantial transformation takes place in Alberta.

Examples of qualifying products:

You could use the Made in Alberta label on these products:

• Roasted Coffee: Raw beans are imported to Alberta and roasted, then packaged, either ground or whole.
• Blackberry Jam: Blackberries and other ingredients are sourced in Alberta or imported and processed into jam.
• Whisky: Grains are sourced in Alberta or imported and distilled into whisky.
• Beef Sausage: Beef and other ingredients are sourced in Alberta or imported and processed into sausage.
• Bread: A large Canadian agri-food company produces bread in its Alberta facility.

Examples of products that do not qualify:

You would not be able to use the Made in Alberta label on products that are imported into Alberta and repackaged for sale. Likewise, the label could not be used on Alberta products or ingredients that are processed and substantially transformed outside the province and returned here for sale. For example:

• Dry Cake Mix: Cake mix ingredients are processed and packaged by a Saskatchewan agri-food company (co-packer) for your Alberta company.
• Pork Sausage: Alberta hogs are sent to a federally registered facility in British Columbia to be butchered and processed into sausage.
• Bread: A large Canadian agri-food company produces and packages bread outside of Alberta.
