Alberta Local Food Week – Aug 11-17

Celebrate Alberta Local Food Week: How You Can Get Involved

August 11–17, 2025 marks Alberta Local Food Week, a province-wide celebration of the farmers, growers, and producers who bring fresh, local food to our tables. This annual event is more than just a week of appreciation—it’s an invitation for Albertans to connect with their food and support local economies in meaningful ways.

Here are five easy ways to get involved this week:

    1. Shop at a Local Farmers’ Market
Visit one of Alberta’s over 140 approved farmers’ markets and meet the producers face-to-face. From crisp vegetables to homemade preserves, it’s a chance to fill your basket with local goodness while supporting small businesses (Alberta’s Farmers’ Market Association)
    2. Visit a U-Pick Farm
Spend the day picking fresh berries, veggies, or even flowers at a local U-pick farm. It’s a fun family activity and a direct way to engage with where your food comes from.
    3. Dine at Participating Restaurants
Check out the Alberta on the Plate culinary festival, where restaurants across the province are offering locally-sourced menus. It’s an opportunity to experience how chefs turn Alberta ingredients into unforgettable dishes.
    4. Take Part in Alberta Open Farm Days (Aug. 17–18)
Cap off the week by visiting a working farm during Alberta Open Farm Days. Many farms are opening their gates for tours, tastings, and hands-on experiences that offer a rare behind-the-scenes look at Alberta agriculture.
    5. Share on Social Media
Use the hashtag #ABLocalFood and #MadeinAlberta to share photos, recipes, and stories of how you’re celebrating. Whether you’re cooking with local ingredients or exploring a nearby market, your post helps build awareness and community support.

And of course, look for the Made in Alberta label whether your shopping at the local farmers market or a national grocery chain.  Alberta Local Food Week is a reminder that buying local isn’t just good for the economy—it’s a celebration of Alberta’s land, people, and traditions.
